Join us, and BUILD YOUR WORLD.A Brief Summary of This Position: The engineering team supplies professional services for highway construction contractors across the United States and production drawings for Valmont metal fabrication plants. The company believes strongly in teamwork and cross-functional collaboration among all team members.This is an individual contributor position in the Engineered Support Structures (ESS) division. This position requires very little travel or construction site visits. The incumbent reads and interprets customer order information. This position processes orders for production and customer submittal drawings, consistent with Valmont standard practices, in the moderate range of complexity. Limited customer contact may be required to aid the design/order process.The Engineering Department is responsible for processing drawings for customers and the manufacturing facilities while maintaining the company objectives for quality and lead-time. This Individual Contributor role must interact with people in all departments in order to maintain good-natured and profitable relationships in inter-departmental communication.The incumbent will, with required supervision, read and interpret customer specifications, plans and other order information to determine the format required to complete customer orders. He/she will be responsible for reporting any inconsistent, conflicting or missing customer information to the Drafting Manager. The incumbent shall have knowledge of departmental and company goals, policies and procedures and the product lines represented. Deviations from these shall be minimal and only when beneficial to the department, division and company.This position is important to the results of the department and the division. The incumbent is allowed to establish work routines and/or schedules, within company policies, in order to maintain efficient order flow. He/she may identify, recommend and help develop revisions to standard product designs, drafting procedures and systems to improve the department and the division.Essential Functions:

  • Determine information from construction plans and field surveys
  • Create structure shop drawings for fabrication and field assembly
  • Determines changes, corrections and requirements to meet project demands
  • Makes sketches for use by other designers/drafters
  • Interpret specifications and standards and provide information to others so that customer requirements are met or improved
  • Check shop and field erection drawings for accuracy and completeness per project specifications
  • Coordinates with designers and project engineers daily to ensure drawings meet project requirements
  • Coordinates with key shop personnel to establish best practices on the shop drawings
  • Develop working knowledge of specifications: ASTM, AASHTO, AWS D1.1, AISC and various State DOT standards
  • Communicates with customers, both verbal and written, to resolve specification questions in preparation of drawings
  • Provides assistance and input on project basis to other team members in development of shop drawings
  • Complies with Company's attendance policy
  • Follows prescribed safety rules and regulationsOther Important Details about the Role:

    • This position reports to Manager - Drafting Services and does not have direct or indirect reports.Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
      • High School diploma and 1+ years of work/educational experience in an engineering/drafting field
      • Technical skills in computer aided drafting and basic understanding of mathematics normally acquired through an Associate of Applied Science degree and/or related experience (includes Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry)
      • Experience with 3-D modeling techniques
      • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret manufacturing drawings, design constraints and product requirements
      • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment
      • Demonstrated strong professional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
      • Must possess strong problem solving skills, with attention to detail
      • Ability to identify, communicate and participate in process improvement opportunities aimed at reducing cost, improving efficiencies and increasing customer satisfaction.
      • Ability to work in, and be an integral part of a team environment
      • Excellent customer focus, including positive customer feedback
      • Acceptable attendance and prior work record
      • Working knowledge of weld symbols
      • Regards quality and document control processes as key job functions
      • Daily use of MS Outlook
      • Drafting in AutoCAD (2018) - LISP programming is a plus
      • Experience with 3D modeling (Creo, Tekla, SolidWorks, Inventor, etc.) a plus
      • Utilize MS Excel daily (understanding of Visual Basic for Applications a plus)
      • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot Business Information Systems a plusHighly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
        • 3+ years of experience in a related field (cell tower, utility structures, steel fabrication, etc.)
        • Associates degree in engineering/drafting related field
        • Experience in drafting and materials fabrication environment, particularly in design or detailing, is highly preferable
        • Experience and working knowledge of:
          • Strong working knowledge of 3D Computer-Aided Design Software: AutoCAD Inventor, Tekla Structures, Creo, Solidworks, etc.
          • AASHTO Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires and Traffic Signals, AWS Codes and welding symbols, ASTM Standards, Land Surveying, Standard Drafting Practices
          • AISC and various state DOT standard specifications
          • Visual Basic for Applications and/or other programming/coding experienceWorking Environment and Physical Efforts: Work is typically performed in an office setting. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. No travel requirements for this position. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment.
