A Brief Summary of This Position:This individual joins a team focused on developing innovative products and processes, manufacturing improvements, and cost-cutting techniques within the utility industry applications of structural supports with emphasis on concrete poles and poles of other materials. Overall the applicant will be involved in evaluating new products, test methods, machinery, tools, equipment, and engineering design methods under direction of the Chief Scientist and Director of Concrete R&D. The aim of the R&D Product Engineer is to improve and advance the current technologies offered by Valmont and to develop innovations that strengthen Valmont's position in the marketplace.
Essential Functions:

  • Bring new products into production, and assist in maintaining and improving current products under the direction of the Chief Scientist and Director of Concrete R&D
  • Responsible for the design and validation of new products and product lines
  • Works in design and development activities to meet project requirements as defined by the Chief Scientist and Director of Concrete R&D
  • Works as a technical liaison between Valmont clients and the Utility Division to incorporate client feedback into the design and fabrication of existing and new Valmont products
  • Responsible for intra-team coordination of project design work between SWATT/Prod Development/Fabrication and Testing teams.
  • Follow standard design and development procedures, recommending updates to design procedures when needed
  • Responsible for modifications to existing designs and products to meet changes in manufacturing capabilities, support cost reduction activities, and address reliability and warranty issues
  • Responsible for providing creative and innovative engineering solutions that aid in the resolution of field and manufacturing problems and in the maintenance and improvement of existing products
  • Responsible for reviewing and providing input to the product development procedure to ensure continuous improvement of processes
  • This position reports to the Chief Scientist and Director of Concrete R&D
  • This role requires up to (15%) travel (internationally/domestically), including overnight stays
  • This position would have a hybrid schedule, some days in the office and some days working remotely
    Other Important Details about the Role:
    • The R&D Product Engineer acts as a project team associate working with cross functional partners to design and develop activities required to meet division R&D requirements
    • Position requires good oral and written communication skills, and working in team environments
    • Position requires the ability to meet project milestone dates
    • The R&D Product Engineer must continually improve his or her knowledge of existing assemblies, keep up-to-date on manufacturing capabilities, and developing an awareness of the field usage of Valmont products
    • Responsible for advancing personal technical competence in order to participate in new design concepts using the latest state-of-the-art technology
    • Provide technical support to other departments with Valmont as required
      Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
      • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural engineering
      • Minimum of 6 years of experience in engineering with a structural emphasis
      • Proficiency with MS Office applications (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Project); AutoCAD; and commercial structural FEA software.
        Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
        • Master's degree in Civil or Structural engineering
        • Experience with a wide variety of structural materials (Concrete, Steel, Composites, Plastics, and Wood).
        • Knowledge of concrete manufacturing processes and reinforced concrete behavior.
          Working Environment and Physical Efforts:The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. - - - Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. - 15% travel requirements for this position. - The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. - The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. - Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. - Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
