ATTENTION Merit System Employees: --Do not apply through this site.If you are a current Merit System employee, please click HERE to log intothe internal career site.Grade 18Click HERE for Salary RangesCLOSE DATE03/05/2021SUMMARY Individuals working as Recreation Center Directors in the Merit System are responsible for overseeing, planning and implementing recreational programs and managing recreational facilities. Such individuals establish policies, procedures and guidelines for athletic programs, leagues and special events. They prepare and monitor the departmental budget, oversee and manage the maintenance activities and inventory for city-wide parks and recreational facilities, and direct subordinate staff in their job duties, providing feedback and training to improve their job performance. Employees in this job class also spend time communicating and interacting with the public, City Officials and the media to gather feedback and promote Parks and Recreation activities and special events.TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Plans, schedules, implements and oversees all Recreation Center events, athletic activities, leagues, programs, and special events
  • Oversees the day-to-day operations and management of multiple recreation centers throughout the jurisdiction.
  • Develops, oversees, and implements policies, procedures and guidelines for recreation and athletic activities, leagues, programs and special events.
  • Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
  • Communicates and interacts with various groups of people (e.g., public, recreation center patrons, City Officials, media outlets, etc.) to inform and promote Parks and Recreation activities and special events and to answer questions, handle concerns, and gather feedback.
  • Prepares, monitors, and administers departmental or organizational budget by reviewing spending trends, expenditure reports, analyzing financial data and ensuring expenditures are within annual budgetary limits.
  • Acts as class instructor and game official for various recreation center programs, activities and classes.
  • Oversees and manages the upkeep and maintenance activities and inventory of city-wide parks and other recreational facilities to ensure a safe and operational working environment.The following Minimum Qualifications are required for this job.     • Driver's license.
    • Experience instructing/training individuals or groups.
    • Experience planning and organizing sports leagues, youth leagues, athletic programs, or recreation activities.
    • Experience assisting with facility operations (e.g., inspecting grounds, reporting maintenance issues, performing minor repairs, etc.).
    • Experience reviewing other's performance and delegating and assigning tasks in a work setting.

        Knowledge of park and grounds construction and maintenance.

        Work is performed primarily in employer-owned facilities such as community civic centers, recreation centers, etc. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.

        Job involves significant and concerted physical exertion required for regular prolonged periods of walking, running, stooping, kneeling, crouching, etc.
