Histology Tech - UAB Muscle and Nerve Histopathology Lab

Monday - Friday

8:00AM - 4:00PM


Dr. Erobo Ubogu, Professor of Neurology, Director of the Division of Neuromuscular Disease and Shin J Oh Muscle and Nerve Histopathology Laboratory.


Summary of Responsibilities for Muscle and Nerve Histopathology Laboratory Technicians

  • Prepare appropriate forms for scheduled patient biopsies. Make copies of forms as needed (these are to be updated annually).
  • Physician/patient assistance during and following biopsy surgery procedure in biopsy suite or in hospital. Complete "Time-Out" process, witness informed consent and ensure patient and physician signatures prior to procedure. Provide patient and caregiver post-operative management instructions. Arrange for patient transportation as needed.
  • Preparation and maintenance of biopsy suite and surgical supplies. Change bed linen for each patient, sanitize the bed and surrounding areas and change biohazard bags.
  • Have biopsy trays exchanged in Central Sterile for clean trays following biopsies.
  • Obtain pre-prepared syringes with local anesthetic from pharmacy prior to each biopsy surgery day
  • Check for correct billing information for specimens received outside of UAB.
  • Call outside laboratories to schedule specimen delivery and provide specimen handling and troubleshooting advice
  • Generate medical record numbers using EMMI program for specimens received outside of UAB.
  • Generate accession number in PathNet (dedicated software program for pathology lab data entry and reporting and enter gross specimen description information.
  • Tissue processing for clinical diagnostics (300-400 specimens per year):

    A. Accession and photograph specimens

    B. Process tissue (paraffin sections using Citadel processor, manually process tissue for nerve teasing, tissue for plastic embedding and skin punch biopsies).

    C. Print slides for each case accessioned (paraffin, frozen, and semi-thin sectioning).

    D. Cut frozen, paraffin, and semi-thin sections

    E. Log calls for specimens to be delivered, track specimens if deliveries are not received by noon on the day for delivery and handle specimens from outside of UAB. Call sending laboratory if specimen is not packaged appropriately and indicate this on the requisition for report and quality metrics.

    F. Manual staining (non-enzyme and enzyme histochemistry for paraffin and frozen sections, immunohistochemistry for paraffin and frozen sections, free-floating skin PGP 9.5 immunohistochemistry and semi-thin plastic embedded nerves ).

    G. Prepare buffers/staining solutions weekly per staining protocols

    H. Cut and stain control tissue with cases each week. Log control cases used in appropriate binder.

    I. Trouble shooting any stain or equipment-related issues

    J. Coverslip slides and grouping slides for each case in order for review

    K. Nerve teasing as needed

    • Record, prepare, document and send out slides or tissue as requested by physicians or laboratories outside of UAB. Ensure external reports are appropriately filed in UAB patient electron medical record.
    • Prepare orders for supplies needed in lab and for biopsy procedures. Follow up once PO numbers are issued for estimations for shipments and document any delays in shipment.
    • Maintain safety and other standards of laboratory according to hospital protocol/policies updated annually. Keep abreast of the changes in policies per SCR and UAB Health and Safety websites.
    • Perform yearly checks for timers, pipettes, thermometers and balances. Standards are kept with the UAB Hospital Laboratory Quality Manager.
    • Ensure 12 hours of continuing education are completed yearly. Ensure Employee Health for yearly TB testing.
    • Complete yearly Hazardous Waste Handling and Packing" for working with and disposal of hazardous chemicals.
    • Complete every two years "Packaging and Shipping of Infectious Substances" and "Shipping Biological Substances, Cat. B" in order to ship patient tissue every 2 years.
    • Complete yearly "Medical Waste Management for Labs" to sign for Stericycle pick-ups
    • Maintain Chemical Inventory as chemicals are received from shipment orders or used. Record Lot Number of Reagents and materials used in the lab in the appropriate binder.
    • Prepare/modify policies and procedures according to current College of American Pathologists (CAP) guidelines as new checklists (Laboratory General, All Common, and Anatomic Pathology) are posted on the CAP website. Also ensure yearly review is documented for each person and that changes are understood and followed in the laboratory.
    • Maintain employee files in accordance with CAP requirements.
    • Ensure equipment is functioning properly and have checks by qualified personnel at established intervals. If equipment malfunction requires person from another company, get quote and PO# from Caroline. Arrange for repair and document in appropriate binder.
    • Daily perform and document temperature checks on all appropriate equipment.
    • Arrange disposal of hazardous waste when carboys are -- full. Call facility if pick up is delayed.
    • File slides with a three week delay from initial review to allow for more drying of slides. File slides pulled for other reasons when review has been completed. Aqueous mounted slides are filed separately and can be filed weekly.
    • Complete quality metrics (QM) reports every 3 months and Professional Competency Intra-laboratory Peer Review monthly to meet CAP requirement.
    • Prepare Monthly Gross Description Reporting form using Accession Log information to record cases with color and measurements. Also arrange pictures on desktop from camera in numerical case order in reviewing area computer for laboratory director review.
    • Clean filters for ultralow freezers and remove ice buildup monthly.
    • Weekly (every Friday unless holiday) turn off cryostat and clean according to established protocol documented in Laboratory Procedure Manual.
    • On first Monday of month, empty, clean and refill tissue processor.
    • Weekly wash laboratory glassware, check for detergent residue using CHEMets kit and record results in QC binder.
    • Answer phones and forward to appropriate area or message physician as needed using IMPACT.
    • Change counter paper and restock supplies weekly.

      To perform a variety of routine histological procedures related to preparation of tissue for microscopic examination by a pathologist. To perform procedures including embedding, microtomy, staining, and other special techniques needed for diagnosis.

      Position Requirements:

      UAB Muscle and Nerve Histopathology Lab Qualifications


      ---High School diploma or GED required.

      ---Associate's degree, 24 credits college coursework with emphasis in biology & chemistry, and/or 2 years of applicable laboratory experience (with supporting letters of reference).


      Currently certified or eligible for certification as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required. If eligible for certification, must be certified within two (2) years of date of hire.

      Preferred Qualifications

      --- BS degree in biological sciences or Medical Assistant degree

      --- Formal training in an accredited histology technology program leading to an Associate of Science Degree

      --- At least a year's experience working in a clinical anatomic pathology laboratory

      --- Prior experience working with physicians and patients in ambulatory or inpatient settings

      --- Current histotechnician certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology is a plus but not necessary initially (certification is expected within 3 years of employment at UAB)
