As Chief, Mental Health Service the responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: planning, developing, coordinating, directing, and evaluating the operational aspects of mental Health programs within BVAMC. The Chief of Mental Health Service will assure that all eligible patients receive proper psychiatric care; provide quality mental health treatment; and ensure that all patients and staff are exposed to a safe working environment.
Birmingham VA Medical Center is a teaching affiliate with UAB and nurse practitioner collaboration and trainee supervision may be required.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM-4:30 PM BASIC REQUIREMENTS: U.S. Citizenship required. English language proficiency (written and spoken) required. Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A favorable physical examination prior to employment may be required. Licensed as a Social Worker (Verification required). Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) is required. MINIMUM GRADE REQUIREMENTS FOR GS-14:
Experience, Education and Licensure. Individuals assigned as care line management must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and must be able to provide supervision for subordinate staff to qualify for licensure. Their experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. They may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.
Assignments. Licensed or certified to independently practice social work at an advanced level. Senior Social Workers typically practice in a major specialty treatment program area, such as a Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center or Polytrauma Network Site; a Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Center, or a national VHA referral center, such as a national Center for Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder or a national Transplant Center, or other program areas of equivalent scope and complexity. The Senior Social Worker is assigned administrative responsibility for clinical program development and is accountable for clinical program effectiveness and modification of service patterns. They are also assigned in settings where they have no access to social work supervision, such as CBOCs or satellite outpatient clinics. They may be assigned to work with special patient populations with highly-complex health or mental health problems requiring expert level psychosocial interventions, such as VA/DOD liaisons assigned to Military Treatment Facilities as part of seamless transition or social worker case managers in Mental Health Intensive Case Management (MHICM) programs.
Social Worker Program Coordinators and Manager. For Social Worker Program Coordinators, grades are determined by the scope of responsibility and the type, size, and complexity of the assignment.

Their experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. NOTE: The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate's education and experience and recommend the step at which the candidate will be placed in that specific grade. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

Physical Requirements: Satisfactory physical examination as determined by the Employee Health Unit upon appointment only. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019 ( ). Functional requirements include light lifting under 15 lbs, light carrying 15-44 lbs, walking and standing and standing for up to 8 hours, use of rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, ability to read type written characters (glasses permitted), ability to hear the whispered voice (hearing aid permitted), repeated bending for up to 8 hours, etc.
