Innovate Birmingham’s coalition of community and employer partners came together in 2016 following the award of the US Department of Labor’s America’s Promise grant. The Innovate Birmingham Workforce partnership is woven together by a shared belief: talent is distributed equally in our community but opportunity is not. The goal of the partnership is to solve two problems with a unified approach:

(1) Meet the demand of an IT workforce growing at the second-fastest pace in the country; (2) harness the potential of under- and unemployed residents in Central Alabama. Our programs establish a sustainable pipeline of talent in Birmingham to fuel inclusive innovation for local employers, meeting IT workforce demand for the region by offering demand-driven education, training and employment opportunities for area residents who are disconnected from the labor market:

Innovate Birmingham meets the talent needs of regional employers by harnessing the potential of local talent. We do this by providing holistic support and career development for aspiring tech professionals, and producing programs that align with local industry demands.

The position of Director is employed by UAB and reports jointly to the Innovate Birmingham Board of Directors and to External Affairs in UAB’s Office of the President. The Director serves as the primary point of contact for all Innovate Birmingham partners, managing seven primary processes to ensure program objectives are met: partnerships, grant compliance, program and personnel effectiveness, grant renewal and sustainability strategy, effective coordination between partner organizations, training students, and helping participants transition to employment.


• Network with partners throughout the region to build relationships and support (financial and other) to ensure the longevity of the program.

• Identify, target, and connect with potential supporters and/or program partners in Birmingham.

• Maintain regular contact with partners (both existing and potential), providing frequent updates on program status and outcomes.

• Lead strategy and grant writing to ensure program sustainability.

• Develop strategy to implement training, support and placement services to reach Innovate Birmingham goals.

• Coordinate communication between Innovate Birmingham partners.

• Ensure regular production of marketing content for a variety of stakeholders, including regional employer partners, media, potential funders, and other national resources.

• Track data, and use data to inform discussions with employer partners, the Birmingham Tech Council, Grant Program Officer, and other participating organizations.

• Act as an ambassador for Innovate Birmingham and program partners in a variety of forums, including town halls, panels, and association meetings.

• Clearly articulate metrics with a timeline to reach objectives as set out in grant agreements and strategic plan.

• Build and cultivate relationships with program partners throughout Birmingham including but not limited to employers, funders, and general supporters (e.g., public officials, influential civic leaders).

• Oversee the efficient operations of the recruitment and intake processes, the education and training services, and employer engagement that leads to job placement for all Innovate Birmingham programs.

• Build and maintain clear processes to facilitate grant effectiveness, including the development of personnel.

• Develop strategy for grant renewals and expansions according to program values and mission.

• Support the Innovate Birmingham program team, as needed through identifying problems and helping form solutions.

• Serve as principal investigator and point of contact for the multiple grants, ensuring compliance with grant requirements, as well as UAB OSP, IRB, and Grants Accounting procedures.

• Oversee grant evaluation by managing the research team to ensure ongoing data collection and analysis, and by working with coalition partners to acquire current market data to inform program direction.

SALARY: $60,000.00 - $80,000.00 Commensurate with qualifications and experience

Bachelor's degree in a related field and five (5) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.  Master’s degree in a related field and three (3) years of related experience preferred.

The ideal candidate will have experience in non-profit leadership, operational and organizational management, staff and team development, and budget management. The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to set and achieve strategic objectives. An understanding of Birmingham’s technology ecosystem is a plus, as is knowledge of the workforce development sector.
