Full Time 32 Hours Per Week – Night Shift

11pm-7:30am

Alabama Therapeutic Education Facility (ATEF) in Columbiana, AL. 

 

RN Shift Differentials

Weekday Eve - $1.50

Weekday Night - $2.00

Weekend Day - $1.00

Weekend Eve - $2.50

Weekend Night - $3.00

POSITION SUMMARY

  • The Registered Nurse (RN) services patients in a correctional setting for elderly inmates with psychiatric or developmental disabilities under the direction of a managerial Registered Nurse or Medical Director.
  • Assists in carrying out rehabilitation programming and activities for residents such as role model interactions, development of social skills, development of daily living skills, reality orientation, recreational skills, etc.
  • Sets up prescribed medications in accordance with patients’ nursing care plans; assesses, develops, records and monitors programs for self-administration of medications and conducts medication management and health education training for individuals and groups.
  • Check’s temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs to detect deviations from normal; assists in controlling aggressive or disruptive behavior.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Registered Nurse shall provide a broad range of services to the center including screening, assessment, medication delivery, treatment plans and patient education.

  1. Assesses plans and delivers nursing care to inmates.
  2. Provides leadership to LPNs, CNAs and other nursing paraprofessionals in patient care.
  3. Coordinates multiple medical services for diagnostic and treatment as directed by the Medical Director, Physician, Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.
  4. Enter housing units to pass medications or other medical items and to conduct medical screening when necessary.
  5. Assist in minor medical or surgical procedures.
  6. Assist in screening of emergencies for necessity and priority for referral to physician or mid- level providers and conduct daily sick call screening
  7. Check and change dressings as required or as ordered.
  8. Maintain working knowledge of pharmacology including drug reaction/overdose.
  9. Maintain working knowledge of therapeutic diets and nutrition and implement as per orders.
  10. Maintain working knowledge of social and behavioral sciences, particularly as applied to the Correctional setting.
  11. Be capable of giving CPR instructions and ability to take charge in a CPR emergency.
  12. Maintain the Problem Oriented Medical Record (POMR).
  13. Administer medications including IV therapy and IM injections and all other approved routes of administration per the order of the physicians/mid-level providers.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Standard medical setting in a correctional facility, which includes daily interfacing with inmates, correctional staff, and health care personnel.  Temperature extremes may be encountered while moving throughout the facility outdoors and indoors in buildings without air conditioning.

 

The following requirements list the minimum to qualify.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.

LICENSING: Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Alabama

CERTIFICATION: Current CPR certification

EDUCATION:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school
  • BSN preferred

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • One (1) year clinical experience preferred
  • Correctional experience preferred
  • Experience giving CPR instructions and possess ability to take charge in a CPR emergency
  • Experience with or possess the ability to work in a stressful environment and assist staff with various policies, administrative and organizational projects
