Job Description

Food & Wine is looking for an organized, detail-oriented, and resourceful Editorial Assistant to assist staff in two locations and assist in the creation of print and digital content. This position is based in Birmingham, AL. The Editorial Assistant is responsible for the department's administration-coordinating calendars, travel, and meetings; assisting with editorial research; and supporting the Food Department with administrative tasks as needed. The ideal candidate for this position is an accomplished multitasker who has a passion to learn and grow at Meredith. This candidate should be able to work independently and juggle multiple tasks at one time, meeting all deadlines with a positive and communicative attitude.

Essential Job Functions

50%

  • Support the Food Department in SEO and metadata for recipes, sourcing ingredients, editing recipes, communicating with restaurant PR, etc.
  • Produces e-commerce and other short digital assignments as needed
  • Supports senior editorial staff by formatting recipes, calling in products, shopping for ingredients and testing/prepping recipes as needed

30%

  • Manages the Editor-in-Chief's schedule; assist the senior editorial team with administrative tasks as needed, including coordinating office events, sending out comp copies, and managing contact lists
  • Liaises between the Editor-in-Chief and other editorial departments, including sales, events marketing, and PR
  • Submit monthly expense reports for Editor-in-Chief; keeping detailed accounts of expenses to be reclassed to outside departments (sales, licensing, etc.) and communicating regularly with the Business Manager

20%

  • General office administration, including editorial research, interview transcription, magazine production support, calling in products as necessary, shipping ingredients and wine for photo shoots, distribution of mail and packages, etc.
  • Field outside inquiries and assist with reader letters, as needed
  • Assist with awards submissions

Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements

Education: Bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism or related field, or equivalent training and/or experience.

Experience: Administrative and/or content creation experience in a creative, fast-paced office environment (such as a magazine or publishing job or internship).

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize, work under pressure, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to interact responsibly and professionally with coworkers, contributors, readers, and experts
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Acrobat, and InDesign/InCopy is required; working knowledge of corporate social media and/or digital content management systems a plus
  • Ability to respond to questions or problems in a concise and courteous manner
  • An understanding of the Food & Wine brand, as well as a general interest in food content
  • Basic editorial research and transcription skills
  • Culinary degree or culinary background in restaurants a plus
