NPS UNIT: Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument
LOCATION: Birmingham, Alabama
Interns who join Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument in 2023
will assist the park and park partners in delivering meaningful,
engaging, and inclusive programming related to the 60th anniversary
the Birmingham Campaign (April - May 1963) and the tragic bombing
of 16th Street Baptist Church (September 1963).
Depending on the skills and interests of the intern,
opportunities/needs to be met include:
- Lesson plan review for The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963, by
Christopher Paul Curtis. In collaboration with Birmingham Civil
Rights Institute and the Center for Children's Books (CCB) at
University of Illinois, we are constructing a website that will
house lesson plans, chapter summaries, and excerpted oral histories
for the use of middle school teachers, students, and families. We
plan to welcome the author, Christopher Paul Curtis, around the
date of the memorial service, hosted at 16th St. Baptist
Church.
- K-12 field trip program delivery, which runs September 2022 -
June 2023.
- Podcast development. This may include writing up questions,
interviewing authors/activists, editing podcast in post-production,
and social media and/or marketing:

- Oral history collection.
- 60th anniversary events during the summer, TBD.
- Photography - it is incredibly useful to have someone who can
take photos of our events and programs!
- Serving as a docent at the AG Gaston Motel, scheduled to reopen
to the public January 2023.
