Job Description:

O'Neal Steel has an opening for a (3rd Shift) Electrical Maintenance Technician at our Birmingham facility. The Electrical Maintenance Tech will be responsible for covering a wide range of job assignments associated with installing, testing and maintaining electrical equipment, machinery, apparatus, and fixtures. Responsibilities Include but Are Not Limited To:

  • Maintain electrical equipment to meet regulatory codes at the country, state, and federal levels.
  • Troubleshoots electronic circuitry and electrical circuitry to isolate problems and take appropriate corrective action.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of basic electronics, advanced electronics, AC/DC drives, numerical controls, and digital electronics.
  • Must have thorough working knowledge with 3 phase 480V and below.
  • Must be capable of performing component level repairs;
  • Proficient in testing electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of system.
  • Machines and/or assignments included under this job title are: Electronic Technician, Welding for Repairs, Electrical Troubleshooting, Electrical power transmissions and distribution repairs, Hydraulic and Pneumatic repairs.
  • Maintain and perform predictive, preventative, and unplanned maintenance on all site manufacturing and facility equipment to ensure operation.
  • Controls downtime by informing production supervisor of routine preventive maintenance techniques; monitoring compliance.
  • Fabricates repair parts by using machine shop instrumentation and equipment.
  • Maintains equipment, parts, and supplies inventories by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed equipment, parts, and supplies; placing and expediting orders; verifying receipt.
  • Prepares mechanical maintenance reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Maintains technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing technical publications; establishing personal networks.
  • Solve complex electrical and mechanical problems including hydraulic, pneumatic and electronics.
  • Diagnose machine operation failures and downtime using PLC controls and PC programming.
  • Inspect, operate, or test machinery or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions.
  • Assemble, install, or repair wiring, electrical or electronic components, pipe systems, plumbing, machinery, or equipment.
  • Plan and lay out repair work, using diagrams, drawings, blueprints, maintenance manuals, or schematic diagrams.
  • Document work activates with site (CMMS) Computer Maintenance Management System.
  • Oversight of third-party contractors for large repairs and small capital projects. Required Skills: To qualify for consideration, an applicant must possess the following skills. Possession of these skills is a prerequisite for employment.
    • Minimum of 3+ years of high-level break-fix& preventative Journey level electrical maintenance experience required.
    • Experience with maintaining and troubleshooting overhead cranes and associated equipment.
    • Experience with advanced PLC, and/or robotics, and/or CNC repair.
    • Understands electrical, mechanical, fluid power and control systems.
    • Must be proficient in reading and interpreting electronic schematics, blueprints and understanding/troubleshooting solid state circuitry.
    • Must be able to install, test, calibrate, maintain and repair electronic equipment to insure its proper function.
    • Ability to analyze, troubleshoot electrical repairs.
    • Demonstrated ability to perform electronic, mechanical and hydraulic repairs used in electrical and mechanical maintenance technician work assignments.
    • Ability to plan, sequence and setup a variety of operations involved in the layout, fitting, welding and/or bolting of assemblies made from carbon steel beams, plates, angles, channels, bars and tubing.
    • The ability to use hand torch burning equipment, perform non-structural welding using shielded metal arc equipment, and operate various powered metal working equipment such as drills, lathes, punches, shears, saws, mills, presses and etc. plus a working knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics.
    • Ability to operate forklift and overhead crane utilizing pendant, radio or cab controls.
    • Ability to convert decimals to fractions and vice versa. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, decimals and fractions.
    • Must be able to concentrate and maintain productivity in high pressure situations.
    • Basic Microsoft Office knowledge and (CMMS) Computerized Maintenance Management System knowledge desired.
    • Excellent verbal/written communication and customer service skills.
    • A team player that is a highly disciplined, problem-solver with a strong work ethic.
    • Must be able to work without close supervision. Education: Electrical Journeyman Certification, Technical or Mechanical Degree preferred. Non-degree candidates must have at least five years of experience as an Electro-Mechanical technician in a heavy industrial environment. Shift:Must be able to work 3rd Shift (10:00PM-6:00AM) Sunday - Thursday. Overtime will be required as needed.
